Tori Removal (Bony Growth Removal) in Fort Wayne, IN
Tori Removal
Some patients develop extra bone growth on the inside or outside of the jaw. These growths are called tori (one growth is a torus). They are not cancerous and often cause no problems, but when they get in the way of eating, speaking, or wearing dentures, removing them is a straightforward oral surgery procedure.
What Are Tori?
Tori are hard, smooth bumps of extra bone that form in the mouth. They most often appear in three places:
- On the roof of the mouth (torus palatinus)
- On the inside of the lower jaw, next to the tongue (torus mandibularis)
- On the outside of the upper or lower jaw, along the gums (sometimes called buccal exostoses)
They can grow slowly over many years. Many people do not notice them until a dentist points them out.
When Should Tori Be Removed?
Tori usually only need treatment when they start causing problems. Dr. Lugakingira may recommend removal if your tori:
- Prevent dentures or partials from fitting properly
- Need to be cleared before dental implants or full mouth reconstruction
- Get cut, scraped, or irritated when you eat
- Trap food and make it hard to keep the area clean
- Interfere with speaking or swallowing
- Cause discomfort or keep growing
What to Expect During Tori Removal
Tori removal is usually done under sedation, so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Lugakingira makes a small opening in the gum tissue over the growth, gently removes and smooths the extra bone, and closes the area with stitches.
After surgery, you will receive clear aftercare instructions to help the area heal. Some soreness and swelling are normal at first. Soft foods are recommended while you heal, and our team will see you for a follow-up to check your progress.
Why Choose Fort Wayne Oral Surgery?
Dr. Lugakingira is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with advanced training in bone surgery, dental implants, and full mouth reconstruction. If your tori need to come out before dentures or implants, our team can plan both steps together so your treatment fits together from start to finish.
